If you want to remove a section of audio from only one track, use
the split items method.<br>
1. Find the place where you want to start deleting and press S to
split the current track only.<br>
2. Do the same at the position where the segment to be deleted ends.<br>
3. Press control+left arrow to navigate by item to the part that is
to be deleted (play the file to ensure you are focused on the
correct item, i.e. at the start of the segment that is to be
deleted). Then, simply hit delete; ReaAccess should tell you that 1
item has been deleted, and all the other tracks will have been left
intact. The portion of the track where there used to be audio there
will now be silence.<br>

If you want to cut out a segment, but not replace it with silence,
follow the same steps, but do the following extra ones:<br>
1. Press control+1 at the start of the segment that is to be
deleted, to create a marker at that position in slot 1.<br>
2. Once you've deleted the segment using the process outlined above,
find the item that contains the rest of the track (i.e. the audio
after the segment you've removed) and press control+X to cut it.<br>
3. Press the number 1 to return to the previously set marker, and
paste with control+V.<br>

You can scrub through a file with the left and right arrow keys, move by measure with page up/down, and by beat with control+page up/down.

I'm not a SoundForge user, so am not sure which, if any, of the effects in SF can be used as plug-ins in other applications. If they are VST or DX plug-ins, find the folder where they are stored, and add it to the list of plug-in directories in Reaper Options->Plug-Ins. Also keep in mind, however, that Reaper's bundled plug-ins, especially the ones in the JS section, are very powerful.
3. Is it possible to do selection editing in Reaper, for example, to tighten the end and starts of tracks etc, as it is in sound forge?
Yes. Use either scrubbing, or one of the other methods mentioned above to find the position on a track where you want to start/end a time selection, and simply press control+alt+left bracket [ to set the start marker, or control+alt+right bracket ] to set the end marker. You can then delete the time selection with the delete key, loop it by pressing control+R to activate repeat mode, etc. Alternatively, if trimming silence from an audio file, find the start of the audio, i.e. where you want to trim up to, then hit S to split the silence onto another item on the same track. Then, press control+left arrow to find Item 1, the item containing the silence to be trimmed, press delete, control+right arrow to the item containing the audio, and cut it to the start of the track with control+X, home, then control+V. HTH.
