[Rwp] Help with automating volume adjustment

Despite reading the manual, the whole envelope thing remains a mystery 
to me.  The only way I have found so far to automate a volume adjustment 
is to use shift-l and select latch or write. Using alt-up or alt-down 
arrow adjusts volume, but way too slowly for what I am trying to 
achieve.  Any suggestions up to and including a brain transplant 
gratefully received.
