[Rwp] How to diagnose midi not recording?

first, check to see if there are items that get created when you
record and stop. If there are, that means midi is recording just fine.
Second, you don't monitor input like that on midi. YOu need to make
sure you have your keyboard enable for midi output on reaper's
configuration and then, once you create the track and set your midi
inputs and channels, press I to open the routing for that current
track, tab or shift tab until you hear midi output and select your
keyboard as the midi output device. You should now hear sound as you
playback midi. You can also test if midi is working by inserting a
virtual instrument on new track... found in the insert menu. You
select the vest instrument (the included ones like reaSynth are fine
for this) and then pressing Yes in the dialog that comes up, which
sets the routing such that you can play a key on your controller and
hear on your monitors, the actual sound coming from the vst.
