[Rwp] How to diagnose midi not recording?

Hello all, I'm not able to record midi, or perhaps it simply doesn't 
play back. I have so far done all of the basics, e.g., enabled the midi 
in/out devices in prefferences, checked monitor input in the track 
context menu, checked input midi/midi in/all channels, and aparently my 
digital piano is correctly sending midi data through all of midi outs 
and channel 1.

My digital piano has a switch that turns off its own sound, so that 
instead of generating its own audio, it relies on input monitoring to 
play back midi. However, I cannot hear anything even though monitor 
input is checked, neither when recording nor when playing. Do you have 
any hint please?
