Sure, J and K for a snapshot reading of your left and right channels
respectively is one way to monitor levels. Peak watcher is another
OSARA tool though which allows you to specify a db level that you want
to be notified about among other things. You'll probably want to use a
combination of both approaches until you're familiar with the gear
you're recording with.
It's also probably worth adding here that unless you're using gear
that is very much the exception to the rule nowadays, there's no real
benefit in cuddling up close to 0db. You'd likely be in a better
position come mixing stage by upping your session bit depth to 24 bit
and going in at a lower/safer level.
