[Rwp] envelopes tied to items instead of tracks?

Hi:

Was just working on a project that has some track automation... or, at 
least, I thought it was track automation. At least, there are no take 
envelopes to speak of.
However, I've noticed that if I copy items around on the track, the 
items seem to have inherited the automation from the track. So, for 
example, if I use a volume envelope on a track to lower the volume 5 
seconds into where the item starts, then make an item split just before 
the envelope happens, then paste it later in the track, the volume jumps 
to the level of the starting envelope point, in this case -6DB, then 
ramps down again at the same point where other envelopes come in later. 
I thought that track and take automation were completely discrete. I 
guess this is more of a workflow question than anything. How would I 
prevent such things from happening, other than, perhaps, manipulating 
items first, then adding envelopes later?
