You want to make sure your mic is not pointed at your monitoring source,
speaker and such, also using headphones instead will help a lot.
Your mic is known as a cardioid pattern mic, which means it picks up on
one side in a fairly wide pattern, but tapering off as you go around to
the back of the mic.
So make sure the dead side of the mic is always pointing at your monitirs.
I am not a fan of using large condenser mics in most live situations,
especially around any speakers that are live,
your dynamic mics will be much more forgiving of feedback in those
situations.
You also want to maximize your signal level to noise, that means getting
your recording source
as close to the mic as possible, and not having to turn up the mic as
much, for instance when doing a vocal get close to the mic, this may
cause other problems like mouth noise, but it will cut down on feed back
problems.
also cardioid mics tends to have something called proximity, which
means the closer you get to them,
the more pronounced your bass and lower frequencies can seem, which may
be a good thing if you are going for that big balls DJ sound,
or not so good if you are looking for clarity and punch, but it is
something we work with, and give up for the sake of directional recording.
Depending on mic design, some cardioids present much more proximity
effect than others, the new shure sm8 dual dyn is pricey but supposed to
have totally nixed the proximity effect.
So will any mic in onmi mode not have proximity, but then you have much
more problem with picking room noise, and your onmi will certainly
exaserbate feeback if that is a problem.
So try some of these tips and see if it helps.
