[Rwp] new to reaper - where to get started?

Sounds like tuition is going to be your long-term best bet. The Audio 
fundamentals course over at www.cavitraining.com would help you with 
editing but not with midi.

I don't know midi myself all that well but audio editing and adding 
effects, using sends and automation I can work well with and would be 
happy to arrange something with you if you email me off list.

There are also other people on this list who offer tuition who know more 
about midi specifically such as Genluka.
