Good morning:
I recomend you to use the sound reduction plug in included with sound forge, it is a vst effect, I think, but no idea how does it works without sound forge. The results are excellent. You can use something similar in audacity, but, in my opinion, it adds more artifax to your sound.
In both cases, basically, you select a small time of background noise you want to remove, then you create a profile using it and finally selest the whole audio to remove this background from.
It is always better to start with a clean recording, but if not possible, it can be a great improvement.
