The extension thing is an annoying bug in earlier versions of IE that gets triggered in certain cases. As noted by someone else, just rename... or alternatively upgrade to a less broken browser. :) This will happen for snapshots, but we'll host any official releases on our own server, so it won't happen for those. 
As for the key map, I believe REAPER keeps your existing mappings, but any conflicts are resolved in favour of the new map, if that makes sense. I'm not absolutely certain of this though.
