Writing 100%R or 100%l works for me.

Also, just to expand on what Chris said, you don't need to go to the 
track menu to show the volume and pan envelopes. You can press control 
alt v and control alt p respectively.

Also, it's worth noting that there's always an envelope point at the 
start of the project with the value at default.

If you set the first envelope point in your pair to square, I've found 
that it makes the fade curve to the second point very abrupt.

How to make an effect parameter into an envelope.

Load fx chain dialogue, highlight desired effect, click the param 
button, go to effects parameter list, go to show envelope in track 
controls I think it is, I think that's where it is or it might be in the 
parameter modulation submenu in there. anyhow, once you're there, select 
your desired parameter and just press enter. Then when you press control 
l it will come up in the list of selectable envelopes.
