[Rwp] Level Controll on the main outputs

Ok, my second pressing question.

I want to add a basic automatic level control to my main outputs, to just keep my mix nominally in bounds.  Can somebody kindly walk me through how to do that?  I presume I need to do something to set focus before I go to the effects dialog.  But, I've never worked withh main outs before.
And, what effect algorithm might you suggest for a thing like that?  I don't want brutal compression, just gentle A L C.
