[Rwp] Healing Splits

Guys,
This seems terribly trivial, I know.  But, I can't figure out how to heal splits in items.  I pressed the A key, when I meant to press shift+A, and got a new item added.  I'm not sure what I actually commanded there. But, it resulted in an unwanted split.
So, I just wanted to heal that up again.  Control+z would surely have done it.
But, I don't understand why the thing I actually did did not work.
I hit control+right arrow to get to the newly created, unwanted item, selecting it.  alt+control+space then proved that the new item was selected.
Control+shift+leftArrow to add the first part of the original  to the selection.  Alt+control+space now plays the entire original item, meaning the two items created by the accidental split are both selected.  
Go to the items menu, and choose Heal splits in items.  But, the split does not disappear.  I still have three items.  Why?
What am I doing wrong?
