Hi again,
this is the response I got from Midi Quest support:
"Thanks for your feedback. I should give you a little history to add
to your knowledge.
Midi Quest has been around a very long time and one of the ways that
the program has survived is that it is still based on some of the
structures from its inception. My understanding is that all of the
text readers do their job by querying controls for their text contents
and turning this into spoken language. The problem is that Windows,
back at that time, provided only a limited number of controls as
resources and beyond that it would simply fail. The number of
available controls was not even close to sufficient to create even a
relatively simple editor. As a result, and I believe this is true of
all major editor/librarians, we were forced to create our own set of
controls which we use to display and control editing of the instrument
parameters. (Also, we found that relying on Windows to displays these
highly control based editors resulted in unacceptable rendering delays
and a very bad user experience. Another reason why we had to abandon
the control based design.)
At this point, we really can't go back. The graphic layouts are an
integral part of how the information is displayed and if would require
a huge investment in rework in order to present the information in a
way that would support text readers.
We do our best to track the interests of our customers and potential
customers and the unfortunate truth, from our perspective anyway, is
that we have seen anything close to the level of interest that would
be required to make Midi Quest user friendly to the blind. We are
admittedly a small company and we certainly don't have the resources
to invest in a project like this and find out that we were wrong.
Frankly, we would be out of business."
I guess there's no hope for us. Still I wonder whether money really is
such a big issue in this case. Sure, Midi Quest with its more than 700
instruments is a pretty big program, but from personal experience I
know that lack of money is often used as an excuse. After all, it's a
lot easier to say that we don't have the resources to do it than to go
and do something about it. Than again this only my perception and I
might be wrong.
Be as it may, it's very unfortunate that there is practically zero
accessibility when it comes to this kind of software.
All the best
