Hi all,

I'm wondering if some of the technically minded people on this list can
help me.

I'm compiling a sound effects library for commercial distribution and
all the sound effects need to have embedded metadata so that customers
can search more easily for the sounds they want. There is a free tool
that sighted sound designers use called metaedit but it is completely
inaccessible, as in you open it and with NVDA at least, neither tab nor
object nav nor the cursor keys yield any feedbabck at all. this is the
only free solution anyone seems to be aware of so, on the offchance that
the devs might be receptive, I sent them a message via their contact
form, the gist of which is that they want to know what screen readers
need in order for something to be accessible. Being as I have no idea, I
was hoping that someone on this list might be able to give me some
pointers to pass on, or at least the link to some guidelines that I
could forward.

Here's the response I received pasted below.

Thanks for any help,

Justin

Justin, can you explain how you would like to use the tool further?
Perhaps there is a way that reading and writing using CSV files will
work best. I'm afraid I'm not very familiar with systems that provide
mechanisms for the blind to navigate applications. I had my first
experience recently when conducting an audio forensics class for the FBI
which included a blind audio engineer. The hex editor application we
used for the class did not work well with her screen reading
application. In that case we had to come up with a way of exporting and
importing to text files to work with her screen reader. This is what
leads me to the thought of relying on CSV. If the resources were in
place creating accessibility is something we would be more than happy to
develop. Currently any work that is being done is being self funded by
us and happens on an occasional basis.
Having said all of this, let me do some research into what it would take
to make BWF MetaEdit more friendly to screen readers.
Thanks for the note and talk soon --
-Chris
