As far as I know, Insert+S until the speech says, "Off" will do it. The
three modes are normal speech, off, and beeps, which makes tiny beeps
when it would otherwise speak. This third mode is very useful when
you're, say, copying a bunch of files or doing something else that will
generate a lot of output, and you want to know when it stops.
