Just to add a little something to Patrick's excellent post,
any digital mixer will inherently have a small amount of latency.
I might be very small, but because the data must be buffered, it can't
be avoided.
with an analog mixer, you get 0 latency
I'm not talking about latency with going from the digital to analog
converters, and back, but inside the board itself.
Because they are honest to goodness analog circuits which connect
everything.
But you give up the possibility of a lot of dsp based fx and extra routing,
extra routing and all in analog land is expensive, and takes up more space,
it's a whole lot easier and cheaper to stamp chips than to make
analog circuits, even though most of them now are printed circuits, you
still have resisters, and
real faders instead of digital controls and the like,
even though you'd probably never hear that fine a detail you could make
a technical argument about the smooth lenearity
of an analog fader vs the stepping and numerical progression of a
digital fader,
yes, this is splitting hairs, because modern digital mixers have a lot
of resolution.
But you know, people actually buy analog fader controls for their monitors
so they can get the smooth totally connected fade up and down with none
of the stepping,
tube summing amps and the like,
which is another matter, but
having your sound go through analog circuits gives it that warm sound
people are always after.
Now this can be a good or bad thing, depending on what you're after, it
get's very subjective and personal,
but these are the compromises you get in to between an analog and
digital board.

No menus within menus and huge amounts of pages to worry about. Lots of dedicated controls for things like routing to sends and subgroups. There are soft knobs, but everything is context sensitive.
>> I think they did a pretty good job of bridging the gap between something completely digital and a hands-on experience. Obviously, you will get a real analog experience with something like the Mackie Onyx or A&H Zed series, because they are true analog consoles with A/D and D/a, rather than the native digital state of the Presonus StudioLive, Behringer X32, A&H QU-24, and others in that class.

You can override the driver default and decrease the buffer latency within Reaper itself, and I've even managed to do it with NVDA and VSL, but by default, there is a safety which adds some latency.
