[Rwp] Recording in stereo with reaper

Hi Jim and Brett,
Assuming you're using the same keymaps as everyone else, then control
and left or right arrows will always move you to the previous and next
items respectively, never transients. The confusion surrounding this
stems from the developer of ReaAccess overwriting or I guess you could
say repurposing the actions which move to previous and next transients
and asigning them to items instead. No idea why he chose to do that, I
didn't notice at the time, and by the time people started asking
questions about it he'd already vanished in a puff of smoke.
Re automatically splitting at transients, yes, it can be done. Last
time I used it SWS was handling this functionality, but I have a
feeling it's something that's native to Reaper 5 nowadays. From what I
can remember, there's some jiggery-pokery involved in navigating to
the slider which sets the sensitivity. Can anyone else chime in and be
more helpful on this?
Working with tracks and items is context sensitive, and tracks take
priority over items. So, if the last thing you touched was a track,
then if you were to hit S without your cursor being over an item,
you'll still get zero splits because Reaper thinks you're working with
tracks. Yeah, I know, you can't split a track, so the behaviour makes
no sense. So far as I can tell, this is an area of UX that needs a bit
of an overhaul, and I'm guessing it's largely going unnoticed because
no sighties I've ever met use the Reaper TCP entirely from the
keyboard like we do (even the ones who're shortcut crazy still use the
mouse to set up initial selections before they start editing). If you
do have an item selected, but you perform some sort of track
navigation command between selecting that item and splitting, that's
one instance where Reaper will again get all context sensitive, assume
you're working with tracks again and pop a split in every item on
every track at that point. In Preferences, under editing behaviour,
there's a checkbox to stop this from happening, but in effect all
it'll mean is that you hear zero splits more often and don't have to
undo as much lol.
So, to tame this behaviour (which I agree sucks btw), we use the
select current item on current track action or something to that
effect, which tells Reaper once and for all that we're working on this
particular item on this track, so don't be splitting anywhere else.
With OSARA and ReaAccess, that action is bound to Shift+A. So, when in
doubt, hit Shift+A before you split. If you've already got items
selected, it won't do any harm, but if you haven't, it'll save your
bacon.
Sorry it's a bit of a rambly reply, I'm writing during a break in the
day job without a copy of Reaper for reference. Hope it clears a few
points up for ya though.
