I don't think the goal is to output sounds to midi. The goal is to have 
midi trigger the sample, i.e. you whack a key or hit a drum pad, and it 
triggers thunder or prancing horses or blushing maidens or what have 
you. A sampler, essentially. Well, not quite because they're not 
recording the sounds first, they want prerecorded sounds, but you get 
the idea.
