Granula effefts are similar. The audso is chopped up into small sections and altered. For instance, a small section of audio might loop while ascending in pitch, or the audio might be broken up into smaller bits and then those bits are randomized so that they play in a different order. I've not used the Reaper granula effect yet, so I'm not exactly sure on what kind of thing it specifically does, but that's an explanation of granulation.
