There are several automation modes in the track menu.
under the
set track automation mode
Mine is bound to alt-shift-w
That might be in the gene luca keymap everybody is using, can't remember if
I did that or he did that.

I have also made some custom actions to bind volume and pan for more
convenient increments, since the ones that work only move by 5 percent of a
db, so I bound 20 of them together ina custom action to move by one db up or
down when I press the alt page up or down keys.

It's a bit tricky to make those actions, since it doesn't show up in the
second list, you have to double click or perform the default action with
NVDA on the action you want in the first list by focusing on it and then
using numpad insert and numpad enter.

That's the good thing, and also the bad thing about reaper, there are so
many actions you can bind and combine to roll your own the way you want, and
you have to build your own house.
YOu can make almost anything happen, but you have to figurte out how to nail
it together.

There is probably a track or item mute action in that list you can bind to a
hot key if you go searching.
