[Rwp] Cutting and pasting

OK, thanks for your help. I can cut an item by selecting it with control and right arrow, then pressing the applications key. Pressing T will take me to the cut option and pressing enter will activate that option. So far so good. I then move to the part of the track I want to paste the cut item to. I paste it, and it works, to an extent. When Ripple is turned on, it pastes the item in front of the previous bit of audio. Turning Ripple off does a very strange thing; it doesn’t seem to paste any audio at all. So, what if I wanted to replace that audio with the pasted audio? For instance, if I had a bit of dialogue that said, “my name is Tabitha”, but then I realised that I’d just had an extremely odd memory laps, and that my name isn’t Tabitha, but David. Fortunately, I have some audio of me saying “my name is David” later on in that track. So I find the phrase “my name is David,” and I want to cut it, and paste it, replacing the initial, my name is Tabitha. Using the method attempted earlier, the result I would get would be to hear “My name is David, my name is Tabitha.” How would I simply paste over that. In Sonar and ProTools this seems to work perfectly intuitively. I assume that once I get the hang of it, then it’ll be intuitive in Reaper too, but I’m at a loss at the moment.

Thanks. In hindsight, perhaps the Tabitha/David example was a bit convoluted, but I’m sure you get the point. A couple of intelligent guys such as yourselves.

However, you can't cut it because I guess you can't paste a block of time as such. What you can do is cut the items within that time selection.

But I can’t get the same result with cutting. I assumed I’d have to make my selection, then press control X to cut, then control V to paste, but it doesn’t work. Pressing F12 to run the Osara keyboard shortcut help seems to indicate that control X doesn’t do anything, but rather Control Shift X is what you do to cut. Trying this means that Reaper assumes I want to move the entire track, rather than merely removing the selected portion of audio. So then I went to the edit menu, and saw the option, cut items/tracks/envelope points within time selection. It didn’t seem to have a keyboard shortcut attributed to it that I could find, so I activated that option directly from the edit menu. But again, it got rid of the entire track. What am I missing? Thanks.
