W7 will be around a long time, 5 years is a lot of time for things to
change.
Just because official
support for an os ends doesn't mean you have to stop using it, you'd be
very surprised
at how many embedded systems like credit card kiosks and such still even
use xp.
and for our daw systems, using the latest operating system isn't usually
necessary or even desired, maturity and stability is desired over having
all the latest bangs and whistles.
The touch interface
is the biggest issue with the latest version of windows,
often corporate bodies are very conservative and slow to embrace a new
operating system,
but microsoft will always push it as that's how they stay alive by
selling us new ways to do the same old things 'grin'.
This happens over and over again, people panick and think they have to
upgrade, and they get in all sorts of trouble,
but what they are opting in to is being on the bleeding edge of a not so
mature and stable operating system,
and then microsoft or who ever get's a free pool of beta testers.
If you always get budget hardware or buy off the latest retail shelves,
then you'll get the latest operating system most of the time, but if you
buy better stuff, then you usually have the option of better and longer
support for well healed operating systems
as far as device drivers,
most of the important ones are not up to microsoft,
but the manufacturers of the hardware,
microsoft is was trying to compete with apple a bit with it's own
tablets and such, but they weren't received as well,
and even though they are more powerful than apple's tablets, the apps
are not there yet,
and bang for buck it's a lot more expensive to run a tablet and get the
same power and flexibility
and expandability as you would with a desktop or even a laptop system.
Microsoft made all those mistakes with vista, so 10 is supposed to fix
it all,
but time will tell if 10 will be all
it's cracked up to be.
The great thing about reaper is that it doesn't depend on the internet
to run and authorize like other DAW's do,
I personally have never taken to being strong-armed on how to administer
my systems,
and now we have other options for general computing,
linux is a very good option for email, and web surfing and many general
types of tasks.
It is also very easy to install a talking llinux distro.
Also,
if I know the hacker community, someone will figure out how to kill
microsoft's
insistance on updating
if they don't want it.
I know this is not
always the best way to do things, but people find a way to do what they
want,
jail breaking and rooting, and all these kinds of things are so people
can work the way they want to.
instead of putting up with how some company says you're supposed to do it.
You're not required to run any operating system you don't want to.
