Samplomatic is fine if you want a basic sample playback system. You can 
even set it up to respond only to specific velocity layers and key 
regions, but you can only load one sample at a time per plugin instance, 
making that only somewhat useful. You can create complex instruments 
with multiple Samplomatic plugins, but it's far more efficient to use 
something like SFZ for that kind of thing.
You can have it completely ignore midi notes, change the sampling rate 
based on which key is pressed, or keep rate the same but use pitch 
shifting instead, from what I remember.
I have used it for a few projects, but usually don't these days.
