My concern is that this starts to become counter-intuitive. Also, it 
means there has to be a delay while it waits to see if there are more 
numbers coming, which decreases responsiveness. Why not just have a key 
which pops up a dialog to enter a marker number? It's slightly more 
keystrokes, but it's more intuitive and more responsive on average.
