[Rwp] selecting all events in midi editor deletes item?

So, I'm working with a midi project in Reaper 4.77 x64 with OSARA.
I want to quantize a track I just recorded, so I selected the single 
item on the track, went to Reaper's midi editor, then pressed control+a 
to select all events. The item disappeared, and I am no longer in the 
midi editor window. Just to make sure I wasn't doing something stupid, I 
did the same steps again, only this time, I went to select all events 
manually from the edit menu, and pressed enter. And, there went the 
item, no longer on the track.
All I have to say is "huh?" I've never seen this behavior before. Anyone 
have a clue? I don't.

I also can never remember all the convoluted steps to make quantization 
happen. Something about the piano role? I can never get it to reliably 
work unless I auto-quantize the track during recording, which I don't 
want to do in this case, since, for some reason, when I do, I get many 
stuck notes.
