Yep, badly off topic.  And, when the screen reader pep rally stops, I'll get
off it too.
Thanks for helpful suggestions.  I really appreciate that.  I tried those
things, but the problem remains.
Says something like , grouped by, expanded, created etc before each message.

Yo Jim,

Veering wildly off topic here, but I don't like the thought of you
being sad. Two thoughts that might prevent it. Is that message list
defined as a table? If so, using table navigation commands to move to
the column you're interested in and tabling down from there might do
the trick. Or if you don't like holding down that many keys, perhaps
turning off "Announce table row/column headers" in NVDA
preferences/Document formatting might get it to talk less.
