[Rwp] Low volume with VST instruments

Scott
I am comparing the volume to an audio track of an electric guitar. The output of the amplifier goes to a mixer and then to the line input of my sound card (Realtek HD). The recording level is adjusted by the gain control on the mixer. I then go to the Insert menu and select Virtual Instrument on New Track. From there I select an instrument synth and return to the Track View. With the new track armed and the monitor turned on, I can barely hear the instrument.

I did not get back to you immediately because I wanted to play around a little more before I answered your question. The DSK Overture (free) is barely audible but the Steinberg Dass synth is noticeably louder. Now, the ReaSynth that comes with Reaper that plays at what I would consider ‘normal’. Could there be that much difference in VST’s? Obviously, I am a beginner so my questions are going to be pretty naive.

In the parameters for ReaSynth (shift-P) there is one named Volume and the default is –6.00 db. That level does the job. I did not see a similar parameter in the other synths.

Thanks for any ideas you can throw my way,
Russ

Hi Russ,

What are you comparing that volume against?

  Hello
When recording a VST midi instrument the monitor and playback volume is extremely low. I have to increase the volume to around +15.0 dbs in order to make the track usable.
Is this normal or are there any settings that need to be made to correct this? I am using a Roland UM-One midi interface and a rather old Casio keyboard. Everything seems to be working except the low volume.

  Thanks for your help,
  Russ
