sounds like the stuff you can do in sonar, for instance, you can open 
the cinsert midi controlls and for example change the volume by writing 
down the start and ending point or make the start and end point 
selections on the track and then just ajust the start and end of the 
volume control.
however, what i found rather irritating was the fact that i couldn't get 
hold of all the controls as i can do now in reaper.
