The question I have is how does the reaear plugin do it?

For all of its convoluted and confusing functionality, which, admitidly 
I haven't had much time to learn, it does allow the user to write and 
edit automation.

Like osara you can navigate between envelops.
However, reaear has a dialog which shows you the start and end value of 
the envelop and its curve.  Each of these values can be edited.
Granted, this system doesn't let us do all kinds of crazy stuff rapidly, 
but I'd assume it would be possible to create various envelopes 
throughout the project, with them being close together if necessary.
