If I don't have a MIDI keyboard to hand, what I do is the following:
1. Insert a new, empty track into a project with Ctrl+Alt+T.
2. Press Shift+Insert to insert an empty MIDI item on that track.
3. Press either Ctrl+Right Arrow or Ctrl+Left Arrow to select that MIDI item.
4. Press the applications key, and select the item that says, "Open in
built-in MIDI editor (set default behavior in preferences)". This
should open the item in the MIDI editor.
5. Press Alt+3 to switch to Event List View mode.
6. Press I to insert a new event at the current position. From here,
you can set the event type, position, channel, value, etc.
Of course, as Juan said, you could also use the built-in virtual MIDI
keyboard, activated by pressing Alt+B from the main window.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Gavin
