[RWP] Anybody using Reaper 3.76 and sound forge 8 on Windows 8?

When times were tough, I've been able to get some audio work done on a tweaked virtual machine under some very specific conditions. For raw number crunching, it's perfectly snappy with hardware virtualization. Running things like lossless compression codecs and other generally CPU intensive things, on a properly configured virtual machine with some good hardware behind it, is usually no slower than doing the same on the host OS and hardware itself. Now, there are two emulated sound drivers that VMWare uses for modern flavors of Windows, the Creative Labs ES1373, and HDAudio. Both suck for different reasons. The ES1373 buffers can be adjusted such that, for playback, anyway, latency is low enough that using screen readers and such on virtual operating systems don't feel some virtual anymore. Recording is horribly delayed, with no way to compensate. The HDAudio driver is a little more sluggish, even at its best, then tweaking the ES1373 playback buffers, and recording is much better. Obviously, not something you would use for latency, timing critical applications. You can use some USB devices on virtual machines. I generally haven't had much luck with audio devices that aren't more than class compliant, though. Usually, very strange things happen when you attempt to install a proper audio driver for any decent interface. I did actually get Asio with pretty good latency to happen with one interface, but that broke with an upgrade of VMware fusion. But, for something basic, like two track editing in sound forge, you could quite happily use a virtual machine. Better than using a netbook, anyway. I have even done some strictly audio projects with reaper on virtual machines, with enough success to make it work, but not something I would recommend.
