[Rwp] A recording Question.

This is interesting. I use Reaper in that same way, punching in like a tape
recorder. The problem is that mu punch in, and punch out are usuall just
arbitrary points where I decided to take an action, meaning not tied to a
specific location.
Each time I start a recording, it creates a new item, which is really the
way it works. But, what happens to the existing material on that track.
The new item shadows the old item. It's like an eclipse of the moon. The
new item takes precedence. But, if the old item is slightly longer than
the new item, then the unused edges of the old item are still sticking out
in front, and in back. Reaper thinks those are important, and preserves
them.

So, I have this passage that is taking lots of takes to get it right, My
punch in might be the same position each time. But, my punch out usually is
not. If my last take, the one that got it right, is the shortest of them,
then the old takes are extending out to the right, with their totally
useless tails of mostly silence still hanging in the project. Reper now
considers that the .WAV files from which those unnecessary silences are
drawn, are required, when they are actually useless. Cleaning up stuff like
that is not only tedious, but risky.
Best thing I can think of is to set up autopunch in and outs for a thing
like that. It's just that it is such a common occurrence that I hate to pay
the penalty of setting it up all the time.
I am the master of reTake.
I would be interested in other solutions to that. Once can create quite a
mess. And then, you can clean the project, but it doesn't help.

Hmmm. Assuming I've understood what you're asking better now, I don't think
that's possible in Reaper. So far as I can tell the option I sent along
earlier would be the closest you can get in as much as that it acts like a
tape recorder from the point of view of someone who's listening along the
timeline in a linear fashion, but there has to be items and files generated
behind the scenes each time you punch in to enable non-destructive editing.
I guess you'll need to ignore that it's happening, treat Reaper like a tape
machine, render down to a single file whenever you're happy with what's on
the timeline and do a bit of cleaning afterward. If you're sure you'll never
want those temp files back, I guess you could keep the cleaning to a minimum
by specifying a directory for the default recording path that you're happy
to nuke every now and then.

Sorry I couldn't help more man.
