[Rwp] [RWP] OSARA, an open-source ReaAccess replacement in development

Yep,  he didn’t mean to cause a firestorm of controversy over key assignments.  But, oh, what he did.

I don’t think I have ever defined a key map in my life that somebody didn’t like.  Often, it is lots of somebodies.  You really can’t win.

But, while custimizeability can lead to improvement for the individual, it does cause problems when a group like this is trying to help somebody.

What key map are, you. using today?

But, I suspect our friendly developer has his hands full, just trying to get OSARA to work correctly, as it struggles to deal with the quirks of Reaper, and key maps are probably pretty far from his mind just now.  That is as it should be.

While he is focusing on the  underlying mechanisms, maybe we can help with the human factors part.

We could probably actually be helpful if we would find a way for this group to collaborate, and create a map for him.

I’m scratching my head, trying to figure out a means of doing that effectively.

My initial thought would be for one of our experts to lay out a straw man for consideration.  Then, once we have all reviewed that map, people could startwriting in about entries they didn’t like, and suggesting alternatives for that entry.  We would deal with it one contravercial entry at a time.

The final decision should come from a power user, one who is grounded inpractical experience, with a need to be productive and efficient, , and knows what it is actually like to use this tool with such a map.

Once he has heard all our complaints and suggestions, he decides, and that becomes the official setting for that entry.

Once we’re done arguing about the nuances, that would become the official Peepers key map for Osara.  And, we need a convenient way for the novice to direct Osara to use the official map, so we can talk apples to apples when trying to help them.

 

Does anybody volunteer to start the process?  I am definitely not a power user, and so declare myself to lack the necessary experience

I, too, would be in favor of single-key commands for the most common actions. Cake Talking for Sonar, which is for me the gold standard of DAW accessibility, uses single-key commands for the most common actions. Mute, solo, arm, etc. And it has a standard view where you use up/down to move between tracks, and left/right to move between parameters on a track such as name, mute, solo, arm, volume, pan, etc.
