Select those bits of audio you want to silence either by specifying
the beginning and end of selection or splitting them into items.
Before you hit delete though, you'll want to make sure that ripple
editing is switched off by hitting Alt+P to cycle through the ripple
editing modes. When it's set to off, removing that audio shouldn't
automatically adjust the position on the timeline of anything else on
that track.
Hard to know for sure without specific names of synths, but my best
guess would be that the silent ones don't load a patch, preset, sound,
or whatever you want to call it by default. You might be able to pick
a sound yourself in the fx window, but if the native interface of the
synth is inaccessible (sadly many of them are) then you're probably
out of luck.
