At the end of the day it all depends on what kind of tone you want.
I have gotten some very useable tones with using stock fx,
over-drive, and tube saturation and such without even bothering with cab
simms, using eq and such to carve my tone.
You will get a more full range sound,
in stead of a characteristic tone from typical classic guitar cabs,
such as you might get from putting a typical guitar processor through
your console direct,
but
sometimes that can work just fine
