OK Scott, I wasn't aware of pressing escape.  Yes, that's what I was 
basically trying to do.  It was playing only the selection even after I hit 
either home, or W, whichever.  I was trying to get it out of that behavior.

Further, I think I might have figured out my issue with the effects, but if 
I told ya, I'd have to kill ya.  LOL!  Seriously, I won't bore you with the 
details, but it has to do with how my interface on the hardware side was 
set.

I'll give the escape key a try.
