[RWP] Newby question, difference between plugins and software instruments ETC.

Hi folks,

Maybe someone can point me in the right direction to learn this stuff.
I'm familiar with recording ETC, but I'm very new to this idea of
plugins, and software instruments ETC.
I read discussion of software synths, sample players, and then
applications such as Addictive Drums or EZdrummer.
Can someone please give me a little primer on the differences here, if any?
Is an SFZ player a plugin? Is it a software synth?
Is AD a software synth, or more?
