Hi Jim,

I think you can put a compressor on a blank track, then have other 
tracks send all their stuff to  the compressor. However, I work 
primarily with voice and music stuff, the music being on track 1 with 
the compressor, and track 2 being the vocal track.
I just send track 2 to channels 3 and 4 of the compressor so that it ducks.
As far as your other question about the vocal track and the master 
track, I'm not sure. Someone more experienced should probably chime in 
here. Derek Lane maybe can correct me on anything I've gotten wrong.
