Also, using ReaComp's look-ahead (pre-comp,) helps greatly. Just don't
set it too high. I usually have a very slow attack and a medium pre-comp
value. Be aware, though, that if you are using a live track for the
side-chain input, that track will be delayed by the pre-comp value, so
this is best used for processing existing content rather than a live
input source. I use this method all the time for podcast production,
sometimes in combination with fake item automation, sometimes not,
depending on what it calls for.
It is true that you have greater control with automation, fake or not,
but ReaComp as a ducker can certainly be a lot more useful with a good
working knowledge of the theory behind how it works.
