[RWP] Getting sounds from a midi synthesizer to play in Reaper?

The model is, literally, MOTU Audio Express, costs about $400. It's not 
the cheapest option around for the I/O it has, but one of the more 
accessible/easy to configure for what it is.
It does both USB2 and firewire.
You can also use it as a small stand-alone mixer away from the computer 
if you ever need to.
