Hi Scott,
ReaSamplematic 5000 only handled a single sample, so people hooked 16
ReaSamplematics instances together to make a 16 sample drum machine.
There have been several of those available in the forums for years now.
I don't know if any assemblage of ReaSamplematics can be as
sophisticated as something like Poise VST, play 16 samples from virtual
pads, with midi learn, velocity, 8 layers of samples per pad.
When I looked at Poise early on, I could access some of it, but maybe
not all of it, while I think ReaSamplematic 5000 shares the hundred
percent accessibility of the other plugs that come with Reaper, so maybe
16 instances, or even more; of ReaSamplematic is a simpler way to go
than a single partly-accessible sample player.
I think you just copy and paste the single sample into its slot, no
problem with drag and drop like most of the other more sophisticated
sample players.
I think routing or keyMapping samples to play from a midi keyboard is
just as simple, or crude, however you want to consider it; just put each
ReaSamplematic and its sample onto its own midi channel; and slash or;
write in which midi note number triggers the sample.
Unless it's recently improved, I don't know if it can handle midi learn
assignment to particular pads on a drum pad device or receive velocity
messages.
I'm still hoping Poise VST might continue to evolve and will eventually
become very accessible, since the author is an old Akai MPC user and is
listening to suggestions about access.
Here's an early letter I wrote to him, with his friendly answers.
Others wrote to him later, but I haven't been able to keep up on
development in Poise.

Hi Indi,
Thanks for your email.

Answer: Unfortunately Poise probably isn't any better. Poise uses
bitmaps and no tool tips as well.
> Question: I didn't notice anything about assigning Poise's pads to a
hardware

> Is there a way to assign Poise's pads, like note numbers
Answer: Yes. The standard way to link drum pads to MIDI notes is to use
the "Learn Trigger Notes..." command in the main menu, accessed via the
Poise GUI.
Alternatively, MIDI trigger notes are saved in plain text .INI format
files. You could bypass the whole Poise GUI and create/edit "trigger
maps" directly. I can provide more details if you like.
> Question: What about the 8 sample layers per pad, can you imagine a
method I

Answer: The eight layers aren't designed to be triggered directly.
Instead each drum pad has a "Layer Mode" property that controls how the
eight layers are triggered.
For example, in "Layer Tight" mode all sample layers will be triggered
together when the drum pad is triggered.
Poise hasn't been designed with accessibility in mind. It's likely some
of Poise's functionality will be difficult for you to access.
Additionally I don't know what would be required to make Poise
friendlier for your use.
Would you be interested in advising me what changes could be made to
make Poise easier to use for vision impaired people? It's likely that I
will not immediately be able to implement many changes right away. I'm
not actively working on adding new Poise features at the moment but
would definitely like to do a Poise version two in the future.
Best wishes,
Shannon Oram
