Powerbooks got phased out around 5 years ago or so. Macbook pros are the way to goo. 2009  MBP will probably be in the neighborhood of $500 give or take on ebay and will probably run better than your windows machine with a clean install of the OS. BTW speaking from personal experience here as there is one in the house running mavericks with reaper and PT on it. Personally i find more of the dialogs on the mac version are easier to work with. the screen reader sees and access everything. You don’t have the issue where things aren’t in the tab order and you have to use review keys or in the case of the actions list, you can actually interact with it and read through every item on the list. As someone else point out earlier the main interface isn’t in groups which makes it tedious as hell to navigate, but thats where the SWS Extensions and ReaConsole comes in. No running around the interface trying to find stuff. Just press the letter C type in the command to sa select a track, change the volume, pan, phase or arm t any number of tracks at  once, press enter to execute and you are on to the next task.   Thirdly stock reaper has a lack of keyboard short cuts assigned but i spent a lot of time fixing that and building custom actions.as well. Also  SWS brings with it some actions not included in reaper, like adjusting item volume and pan. so instead of opening item properties to do this i just select the item then use the hot keys i assigned to adjusting item volume or pan and move on, skipping the step o f opening the item properties dialog.  

All this being said, switching to the mac is no easy feat at first, its a  brand new OS and file structure and a  brand new screen reader scheme to learn as well. This basically includes forgetting most of what you learn about windows and  learning how things tie together in new world. There is a reason why a lot of people buy macs but never stop using their windows machine. Nothing wrong with that, if you gotta get work done you gotta get work done. While personally your issues with your  audio card made relish in the glory that is core audio, Don’t think you can just buy a mac and be using reaper tomorrow without spending at least two weeks  with your mac as your only computer getting recomfortable with everything you can do on a pc.
