so files that are quieter or have more space in them will compress to a
lower bitrate? I can see that as a pattern because the files with higher
bitrates are the ones that are louder.

The compression ratio of FLAC to PCM depends largely on dynamic range. Files
with a greater dynamic range will compress better than those with less
range, particularly those near the top of the DB scale.
