I would not advise the $43 Fender Schaller-type tuners sold on Amazon.
Their quality is very nice, they lock onto the end of the string like a
pair of ViceGrip pliers, but they don't mount with the tiny screws like
stock Fender tuners.
There are 2 pointed studs that stick out of the body of each tuner that
require a little hole to fit into; and the actual thing that holds the
tuners on is the metal nut on the tuning peg.
I usually do careful work and get things on straight, but in spite of
all I could do, they didn't go on perfectly straight, so the tkuning
keys are all slanted a little from ninety degrees in relation to the
side of the headstock.
The Squire headstock is curved on the side anyway, making it really
difficult to measure what is exactly 90 degrees.
I was gratified to read an article online from a sighted user who had
the same problem, and didn't get his to go on perfectly aligned either.
Besides the alignment problem, the tuning pegs on the staggered
Schaller-type tuners are so short you need to tighten the mounting nut
incredibly tight to get the string hole to appear above the surface of
the headstock.
I'd give them another turn with the socket wrench, way tighter than I
would ordinarily do, and still no hole appearing; give the nut another
turn; wondering when the threads would strip; or the headsgtock wood is
gonna split wide open; and finally I got some string hole to show.
Schaller's idea actually works, with not a bit of surplus peg sticking
up, just enough for a couple turns of string; and the strings running
very low barely off the headstock, no string trees required; but what a
crazy difficult installation process.
How can Schaller advise you to wind the strings down toward the
headstock, when the insertion hole is barely above the headstock, no
place for string windings below the string hole.
