Oh, I've saved a couple of the classic steel Jew's Harps from the
1960's, think the name is Acme or some such generic-sounding brand, Made
in USA.
They're the ones with the diamond-shaped cross-section frame and the
spring steel tine; that fits closely in the frame's gap, and will really
bite a piece out of a lip or knock porcelain off front teeth if you
don't press it firmly against the teeth.
I do a very convincing flanged reverb by breathing in and out quickly
while doing a note, and I can get clear speech from it.
From playing sax, I know about opening the throad very wide, even
letting the Jew's Harp vibrate all the air in my lungs.
That's okay, I save my teeth and still get that same vibrated air in my
lungs, more safely from playing my tenor sax with a very open stainless
steel mouthpiece and a very buzzy reed.
I learned to hum, shout, curse, yell, scream while blowing the sax from
Scott Page, who called all that stuff sax dynamics.
Man, I don't always have the energy or time to get round to playing my
instruments, but I've sure had a really good time with them.
Mostly I poke the buttons on synths, and lately swiping a finger or 2 or
3 on an Android tablet's touch screen.
Occasionally I'll rebel against anything digital and cut a piece of nice
bamboo and make a new flute.
There's an elusive perfect shakuhachi I still need to make.
