Hi Stephan!

I hope i understood you right .. :)
If you want to hear only the instruments on a selected track while you play your keyboard, go to the track menu and select: Set all tracks to automatic record-arm when track selected.

On reaper, if you want to loop something, you can't set it for a track, but for an item, this is a recorded part of a track. There are maybe several different ways to do this, but here are my steps:

First, i set the recording mode of the project to only record something in a selected item. This is in options menu/✓ Record mode: auto-punch selected items. After this, I create an empty item: Insert menu/Empty item. Then, I set the lengt of the item to, for example 8 beats. I think, on reaaccess, you can do it with the tab key, untill you hear item lengt and set the lengt with the arrow keys.

Now, just record something nice and save the recording.
Since an item is only a virtual part of a file, the real lengt of the recorded midi can differ from the item lengt. So, for a better looping, you maybe want to render the item to a new take. To do this, select the recorded item with ctrl+right arrow, press the context key and choose: Render items to new take.
Now you can finally set the looping. If we stay at the 8 beats example, you can loop the recording 2 times by chosing 16 beats, 3 times by chosing 24 beats and so on.

I hope, this is not so confusing, i sometimes have strange workflows, but it works quite fast, if you get used to it :)
