Well, deals like that come along once in a while. An old girl friend of
mine happened to mention that there was an old sax in her brother's atic or
something and would I like to have it? Of course I said yes, what did I
have to lose? She brought it to a gig and I could see right away that it
would need an overhaul, the corks and pads were a dried up mess and it had
this awful stock plastic mouthpiece. I showed it to a sax playing friend of
mine, it was the alto that I still use and this was like almost thirty years
ago. It is the conn Selmer of America horn, which they called the New
Yorker. I use a lakey mouthpiece star 5 on it and those fibracell reeds,
like a 3, and it cuts like a knife if I want it to. And I only stayed with
the girl for about three months, she had a lot of baggage and was looking to
get hooked up quick, definitely not my thing at the time. Anyway, the horn
is still around, better than the girl believe me.

I think the best sounding tenor I've ever heard was a "Conn Naked
Lady",...It was a special edition, as I understand it,...anyway,...I
heard a guy playing one in Abilene, Texas,...Man!,...What a awesome,
Fat, dark tone!,...When I asked the guy about it,...he said he bought
it for $150 at a garage sale...
