Hi Kevin, I did everything you suggested, and Reaper gave me an open error
because the MP3 extension was not recognized as a project file.  I also
tried inserting an MP3 as a media file, and it brought the file up,
supposedly.  But Reaper will still not play the file after it comes up.
Anything else I can do?

Yes,...First click,..."control plus o" to open the "open file" window...

Tab to the particular file that you want to open,...and click "enter" 
and "reaper" will open the file onto an audio track...

Pres the "home" key to make sure you are at the beginning of the file...

Then press the "space bar" and the mp3 file should play...
