Thanks for the tip.  I have managed to configure my mic for recording and I
sure found out about latency!  I thought I would do a test recording and
monitor as I went, but it only scrambled my nerves when I tried to
concentrate on what I was doing.  I will change to WaveOut.  Maybe later a
decent sound card.  OH well.  Thanks.

James, if you're using the built in RealTech sound, the best choice in 
Preferences/audio is wave out, not direct sound.
I hope you got a better sound card than RealTech, though, which results 
in a terrible delay, called latency.
I have a good sound card on my offline music machine, but I use RealTech 
on this online computer, and it provides 187 milliseconds of latency, a 
very noticeable delay when you press a music keyboard key and hear the 
sound produced from a software synth
Spend the cash on a good sound card, if you haven't already.
